At the age of 36, I discovered I was the daughter of two men: one who witnessed my evolution from down the street and one who raised me. The memoir is the exploration of the reoccurring insecruity that I did not fit in, and how I came to understand why.

My dark Spanish complexion always led me to be suspect amongst my father’s fair hair,  blue-eyed tribe. An evening with a famous author who I had interviewed for my local television show, led me to discover the truth about my life. In the crowd that had gathered to see the author read, was one of my true family members: an inescapable twin by every measure of hair, brow and expression (I would later find out she was my first cousin.)

One of One is the story of discovering the secret veil my mother hid behind and the acceptance of the man who chose to father me knowing I was not his own. It also tells about the father I asked back into my life 17 years after the other had died. It is the complex storyand history of three mature adults caught in a love triangle that only had answers and revelations once their own children had children, and the passions that were calmed by age, illness, and death.

I have struggled with how to tell this story without hurting anyone, most importantly my parents. After writing and rewriting for three years, my eleven year old suggested that I might blog the story as if I wre living it day by day. I thought it was a brilliant idea. I would like to let my readers know that the majority of the story is based on fact however names and details have been changed to protect everyone involved.

I have spent five years writing a column in Connecticut. My weekly column, called “Life With Wendy” explored antics about myhusband John and four children. Each weekly column told of comical and often poignant stories from my hectic life and can be read under the section on the right entitled “recent articles.” It is the humorous balance I bring to the novel’s serious nature.

I hope you will continue to share because “One of One” feels real, honest, intriguing……….. And I know it will be a happy ending. I love happy endings, even if the road comes with many struggles, Llfe’s journey will support compassion, knowledge, maturity, and open the mind to “real” life……… Perspective. Your perspective is purposeful. Your insight is genuine. You generate a desire for the reader to read on. What’s next Wendy?

Thank you so much. I am posting the first of my series of blogs on my story today. Everyday will be a continuation of the story. Please spread the word for me. So many of us have similar situations and are too afraid to talk about it.

    Best,
    Wendy
